“…At this site in Wissington, Suffolk, you can ‘enjoy simple riverside camping with direct access onto Constable’s picturesque River Stour’ says Tania. ‘Hire a canoe and head out on a dawn safari or take a leisurely paddle to one of the riverside pubs for lunch’...

Tucked in the waterway-carved Dedham Vale, this popular riverside campsite is best known for its “paddle to the pub” canoe route, a two-mile sailing along the Stour to the Anchor in Nayland (canoe hire £70 a day; rushbankscampsite.co.uk). After you’ve worn yourself out on the water, retire to pre-pitched bell tents — they’re gloriously off-grid so you can detox from your phone while communing with nature in the Constable-painted landscape. When it’s time to explore further, visit the nearby Arger Fen and Spouse’s Vale Nature Reserve, where you might spot a rare hazel dormouse and barbastelle bats.
Details One nights’ self-catering for two from £95 (rushbankscampsite.co.uk)

It’s right by the river so great for paddleboarding and canoeing. If you don’t get a river pitch it’s only a stones throw away

Carefree camping by the river

Our reviewer Charlotte Bond tried out this popular site near Sudbury, where technology goes out of the window in favour of getting back to nature. You don't have to go abroad to have fun in the sun - why not stay close to home and try a holiday under canvas?

We both loved it, got to have a fire and the hot showers were free!
— Deborah B. (Mature couple)

The kids loved the canoe to the pub, the hire of fire pits, plenty of space to play. Lovely walk through the woods to the 11th century church with the Wiston Dragon on the wall
— Darrell E. (Family with older children)

This was our second visit to Rushbanks and it didn’t disappoint. It is a beautiful setting, the staff are wonderful and it has everything you need for a relaxed camping trip away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is probably our favourite campsite.
